brani di Peter Hammill

recorded at The Grand, London, April 29, 1993, from:
Peter Hammill: vocals and guitar
Stuart Hooly "Gordon: violin, guitar, vocals
Manny" Max "Elias: drums
Nic" Mozart "Potter: Bass

Join in an evening in late April of 1993 at The Grand in London during the tour of The Noise. Being a hard loud, Hammill goes on tour with an education that revives the splendor of the K Group: the leader on guitar, Stuart "Holly" Gordon violin, guitar and vocals, Nic Mozart Potter and Manny "Max" to the section Elias rhythm.

The record opens to huge, with a guitar riff to Lou Reed (Vicious) for Sci-Finance (Revisited) . But PH is not a rock star and the atmosphere suddenly becomes harder and more angular.
The Habit Of The Broken Heart is played on a slow, hypnotic bass and drums, based on The Quiet Zone, but at least until the Stooges could be involved in the violin.
Sign from Sitting Targets , is still based on a hypnotic rhythm and the incessant Can.
I Will Find You (from Fireships ) is maybe too melodic for a new wave band, although embroidered Hooly the violin.
Lost and Found is another slow stretched from Over , extended for eight minutes.
Planet Coventry (new song from The Noise ) and Empress's Clothes ( Sitting Targets ) are long, harsh and alienating.
The concert becomes more human with the exciting Cat's Eye / Yellow Fever , still Quiet Zone, which is confirmed as the father of the idea of \u200b\u200bpunk quartet PH. Closing
great with a hot version of twelve minutes First On The Parapet 's masterpiece The Noise, and the encore of Central Hotel , rock & roll by Sitting Targets .

Board for purchase: a vibrant live album for any collector of PH in concert.

Son Of 9 Has Sore Legs

PH > The Noise

Fie!, March 1993

A Kick to Kill the Kiss (4:12)
Like a Shot, the Entertainer (5:13)
The Noise (6:12)
Celebrity Kissing (4:34)
Where the Mouth Is (5:33)
The Great European Department Store (4:58)
Coventry Planet (4:02)
First on the Parapet (8:36)

tracks by Peter Hammill

registered:
Peter Hammill - vocals, guitar, keyboards
Manny Elias - drums
Nic Potter - bass
John Ellis - guitar
David Jackson - saxophone, flute

The album cover shows the famous "number one in a series Loud" , a counterpart to note "number one in BeCalm series" Fireships the previous album. Obviously The Noise (significantly, the noise) is not the first album noisy (fast, new wave) of PH, as Fireships was not the first album was slow.
But evidently the project in those years would be to separate the two souls of the work of Hammill.
The Noise work relies on taste (and sound) as a new wave discs K Group or Sitting Targets , but far more radical of these, perhaps due to the fact that he has paid the debt to the quiet songs with the previous Fireships .
The band consists of PH, from John Ellis on guitar, the rhythm section of Potter and Manny Elias and finally touch David Jackson the wind - so we are very close to the territories of the K Group but with a drummer more hitter.

The opening is pure rock & roll, with A Kick To Kill The Kiss, which introduces the themes of social satire of the album's lyrics.
Like A Shot The Entertainer is a nice catchy song that could easily be broadcast in radio or enter the charts, perhaps as a cover of an artist less radical Hammill. But
The Noise is not a hard disk or a catchy easy, and it is made clear by the title track, a six-minute rhythmic wall of sound.

"I loved the noise
breath
electrical noise has filled the void
roared into space

I loved the noise
I loved the heat
pum-pulsing beat that primary "

Celebrity Kissing is rock & roll, Where The Mouth Is is hard rock and The Great European Department Store is art rock.

Coventry Planet is a cold blade and sharp.

"out, out of reach,
you can not measure any reaction
only silence from the front row
silence and you you're naked on stage ...
wake up!
You wake up and you're naked on stage "

Primo On The Parapet closes the album with one of those masterpieces, of those gems of music and poetry to which PH has accustomed us. A long hypnotic song played on a jarring English guitar that pays homage to the writer Primo Levi jew and his work of historical memory of If this is a man . The title alludes to the suicide of Levi, who flew over the rail of the stairwell of his house.

"Four Horsemen of the carriage drive home the Holocaust
sense of history and how we see our new world?
learn to forget?
A toast to Primo
forgive but not forget.
final word of caution
from the edge of the parapet
last word to remember
that we must learn not to forget "

A piece that will be applicant Hammill in Concert.

tracks included in the live show: On The Parapet First, Planet Coventry, A Kick To Kill The Kiss, Like A Shot The Entertainer

Board for the purchase: a successful album, with songs in the concerts and especially applicants with Primo On The Parapet, but not an easy job . A recommended purchase for those who know and appreciate Hammill.

PH > In The Passionkirche Berlin 92

recorded live in Berlin April 11, 1992, published in 2009 Voiceprint

My Room (8: 06)
Curtains (6:16)
Usher's Suite (19:15)
I Will Find You (3:97)

Given Time (4:49)

The Future Now (3:51)
A Way Out (7:57)

Modern (7 : 01)

all songs from Peter Hammill, the texts of Usher's Suite of Judge Smith

tells Peter Hammill ever played two concerts in the same way: both with regard to the lineup, which is only decided a couple of hours earlier, that with regard to the interpretation, both depending on the mood of the evening.
Live In Passionkirche, Berlin MCMXCII these words seems to bear witness. It is in fact a solo show of the tour Fireships of 1992 already represented by Typical Performances Only , double CD brings together a representative selection of songs recorded on that tour. The concert
Passionkirche was recorded for a film, printed first on VHS and then DVD, and this double CD is its soundtrack. Yes is therefore one of the evening proved by Typical (but none of the songs of Berlin was chosen for that record), but if it was not explicitly written on the cover is hard to believe.

The evening of Berlin is in fact a particularly harsh and edgy Hammill, more inclined to scream that sweetness, Hammill who abuses a more than usual guitar strings and pounding the piano keys.
The eleven songs in the lineup (the hard disk Typical considerably less - in fact that is actually longer than a typical concert PH), nine of which are in common with the other disk.
Opening is always left to the beautiful My Room repertoire of VDGG Still Life, followed Curtains and I Will Find You by Fireships , particularly in dry and raw versions. But between the two songs, a surprise: the nineteen-minute Usher's Suite, a rare live interpretation of The Fall Of The House Of Husher entirely for voice and piano of Peter only. In addition to being particularly rare opportunity as it is also currently the only existing possibility to listen to the piece, since the two disks on which it is represented are both out of print. Unfortunately, the play is complicated by the absence of texts, which would make it follow a simple theatrical events such as that based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe.

The fury of the evening is enhanced by the guitar Hammill Strap for (Something About) Dance Ysabel - the other piece "different" Passionkirche - in a particularly hard as the next Given Time , and only with the fury of Patient Hammill seems to find a way to vent.
The weather is epic in the finale, returned to the piano versions of passionate The Future Now (once defined by a blast Hammill) and Traintime , very intense.

The bis of the evening was the guitar Modern, with a heartbreaking and tortured guitar.

In the lineup of the show of April 11, 1992 that have been cut for some reason Just Good Friends, Stranger Still and, unfortunately, an encore of Refugee .

Board for the purchase: Typical complement the beautiful, the jewel of Usher's Suite.

Peter Hammill: vocals, pianorte, guitar

Peter Hammill said he had only played live on stage since the beginning of his career. He has shared the stage with VDGG, with the K Group, the duo, a trio, quartet, but the show more typical applicant was probably the one that sees only entertained the audience armed only with a microphone, a guitar and a pianorte.
Typical Performances Only contains a typical show only nineteen (or more?) Pieces selected from those of the European tour Fireships in 1992: Austria, Germany, Holland and Italy.
In the booklet accompanying the double CD tells the criteria for choosing the lineup of songs, not an hour before the start of the show, one with which to break the ice and enter the atmosphere up to the choice of a final .
Typical is not just a typical solo show but is also an extraordinary show that travels at a level of perfection. Very well recorded, with a warm and engaging voice and a very present.

"Clearly we're not seeing a rock concert. The piano keys are hammered as a concert of classical music and the voice is modulated, rises and falls, experiments bold colors, filled with magnificent instrument of its power all the space of the theater and the audience breathes plan. Experience with Peter Hammill singing, but it is not experimental music's sake as the search for expressing emotions and feelings of his texts were almost come to life and perform for themselves. Despite the objective complexity of the songs and sang, there is no shade of coolness in the music of Hammill, indeed, now we are attacked by the tide of emotions, the strength of the songs and their themes, love the life the pain death ... "

The show opens with My Room, a magnificent remnant of Van Der Graaf Generator of Still Life, a song that opened the show so often hear more from the solo repertoire of the band.
"my lungs burst into a cry
how could you leave me here to die
I froze in the ice of this place
how could you let this happen?
dreams, hopes and promises, fragments out of time
all these things have been said
yet you still do not understand how I feel
waiting to be broken "

Curtains comes from recent (at the time of registration) Fireships , which seems to gain from treatment for solo piano.

Just Good Friends is a very classic Patience:
"whenever we are so close
I do it for granted that the last time
as we can still pretend
to be just good friends?
I've devoted my devotion
I did not trump
if it came from your silent life
you see it? "

Too Many Of My Yesterdays is a beautiful song from And Close As This , a studio album that already proposed a PH solo.
"Many years ago I thought you were the only
who knows when people change, give up to become foreign
they go adrift on their lives, surrounded by the past
who knows what is the last goodbye
not try to tell me that nothing dies
not try to tell me that nothing is changed
not try to tell me that nothing is new
too many of my yesterday belong to you "

Vision is an evergreen from the past, the 1971, the era of first band and Fool's Mate, to show that they are likely to change mode and arrangements at the heart of the poetic compositions of Hammill is still very real.
"I have a vision of you locked in my head
creeps into my mind and warms me in bed
the vision of a vision
that protects me fears of night
and as the season goes on my love remains strong
do not know where you end and where do I start I
I just open my mind and memories you pour
be my daughter, be my lover
swallow your glow
take my tongue take my torment
take my hand and do not let me go "

Time to Burn is a beautiful song In A Foreign Town bare of any frills arrangement.

For The Comet, The Course, The Tail Hammill moves to electric guitar, to resume the subject of an epic masterpiece in progressive VDGG finished In Room .

I Will Find You is again a catchy new song by Fireships , beautiful even in the stripped version for guitar.
"We have written in the stars across the sky
music of soul remembers you ...
you can run or hide, but surely
you try, I'll chase you, you'll find"

Ophelia is a classic love song from Sitting Targets (and Love Songs).
Given Time (Fireships) bears some dissonance between the six strings.
Modern is a wonderful hypnotic melody from The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage , which way to present your Hammill theatricality of his voice.

Time For A Change is a piece of Judge Smith, who starred in Hammill pH7. A romantic melody that I can never hear without having to shiver.
"Time to change
I felt bad, strange things were done
house, the house is near
yes, it's time for a change ... "

Patient (from Patience ) is one of the most significant songs of Hammill, exciting and even when he sings the chorus:
"Waiting For The Doctor To Come!"
emphasizing the harshness of the agreements on the guitar.

A moment of pathos so intense it needs to be broken by a return to the piano to a romantic song as yet Stranger Still Sitting Targets by :
"Even stranger in another city
as normal sit out the dance
eating good food alone
toasting the empty glass
and are already planning the next stage
already forgetting the last
No, nothing could be less strange in entropy so
there is no change "

Our Oyster is Out Of Water :
"This is an authentic son of a gun
a soundtrack from China in the universal language
in the universal language of some things should not be translated
There is only one language
that the whole world including
there is one message
when darkness falls
are playing world music
in Tiananmen square
the whistle of bullets "

Going towards the end with the elegance of the understated Shell Skin:
"Turn a card, once a page
the start of some action
reaction illogical thoughts on the appropriate lines
Borges in a dream we move toward the writing of lives "

A Way Out again by the recent Out Of Water, a love song by dramatic:
"dislocated, out of the truth
out of love, out of sadness
off duty, out of orbit, out of control
out of touch, out of line
out of sync and out of time
finished gasoline and tires
astray. ..
... I wish I'd said "I love you"

The last song of the show is Traintime (from Patience )
"lineside cables hum
in outbreaks code as far drums
carrying the message
more along the line someone is yelling
as time passes "

This is a The Future Now, again for piano. Tell that PH does not consider as part of a lineup that can be anything: a rare piece, a quiet song, an explosive piece. Tonight is explosive.
"I want the future now
want to hold in my hands
all men equal and free
want the promised land"

If you remove the disc and you wait long enough you are rewarded with even three hidden track, a second, third and fourth paragraph: Rare versions of Afterwards and Darkness 11/11 (from the repertoire of VDGG: The Least We Can Do ... and even The Aerosol Grey Machine ) and Central Hotel (Sitting Targets) .

If there is a secret art of Peter Hammill is revealed in this Typical .
If I have one disc that would Typical PH.
But I think that it's still nice to hear these beautiful songs in their naked soul when there are already covered by their dress studio album.

Board for purchase: a perfect album that focuses on the essence of Hammill.

What's The Best Type Of Printer

In the quiet of the great Ocean-Sea.

A walk at the foot of the lighthouse
during a rainy day
in the quiet of an afternoon of
mezzaprimavera.
A look to the horizon where the border
between sea and sky vanishes.
The surf on the shore
windy cold west
draws large circles,
immediately canceled by rain
mentrei breast
is invaded by salt
of remote islands.
Also this spring
is the rock of the lighthouse.

There is no definitive album of Peter Hammill or a disk that can be defined as complete or exhaustive. There's a shortcut: PH is an investigator and his jewels are scattered among all jobs. However, there are more refined and better produced album, and Fireships is definitely one of those.
Fireships has one producer (David Lord), is unusual for a musician as artisan Hammill, who is accustomed to working in the home studio (the Sofa Sound) and then finish the job with employees trusted long time. In many ways
Fireships wants to be a recapitulation important in the career of Hammill. It is the first album to come out to his record label, the newly Fie! (from the letter of the greek ph), boasts an orchestral arrangement and very accurate. He has curated a cover instead of the usual black and white photography. From the liner notes is also the first record of a newly formed series BeCalm , while the next job will be the first of the series A Loud . In fact Peter has always been from the trilogy progressive alternating slow ballads for piano or acoustic guitar to rock songs inspired by new wave, sometimes with the same hard, sometimes slower disks ( The Love Songs, And Close As This ) or more lively ( Enter K, Sitting Targets, Skin ). The purpose of officially separating the two cores will not last long: apart from a couple of anthologies of the Virgin, you will not hear more about Calm and Loud , even though the record industry in the years to come will be generally more calm that loud.

Perhaps precisely because of the richness of the arrangements Fireships is an enjoyable disc, although it can be called anything but commercial. It is really amazing that a disk so slow as to be sometimes almost motionless or stunned (His Best Girl or Given Time ) manages to be catchy.

I Will Find You is actually a slow catchy art rock vaguely Roxy Music, which could go on radio and in the live show will be applicant:

"We are writing in a sky crossed by the stars
music of soul remembers you ...
can run or hide, but surely
you try, I'll chase you, you'll find "

A applicant is another song in concert Curtains , the curtain closes on a love story that ends, a song slow and deep like a heavy curtain:

"Tommy got up that morning with rocks in the head
and Silvia was shocked
the story that had fake
was frozen on their lips ... ...
for Silvia and Tommy there was nothing left to prove
have raced for years
to find a way of life that offered
excitation "

His Best Girl is a piece of property even five minutes in his gait freezing electronic, while singing the words of a beautiful girl and icy image:

" In GTi Cabriolet to the villa in southern France Vacation
keep your head down baby, keep your golden curls
you'll always be his favorite girl "

Oasis proceeds winding up with an electronic rhythm that evoke echoes of Eastern odalisques veiled:

"Next to the swimming pool of clear water
powered by a secret spring
your lips are sealed but in the language of your body
angels sing ...
... tell me your secret name
oasis in a desert world "

Fireships is a symphonic piece, evoking the war fleets of ships, blazing, of the Armada anime, the Armada of the light.

"There is a curtain smoke on the horizon
ships that sail fire tonight
is the army of souls, the flotilla from God knows where ...
... we believe to be fireproof
never think it can be burned "

Given Time, the time allotted, it's a slow introspective song about death and the realization that Peter loves to sing quite often in his concerts:
"We make the lives we lead"

seems an extraordinary album, but the song that closes it is a beauty to put in the shade almost all the music that preceded it, an orchestral piece at the zenith while the splendid production of Hammill.

is Gaia, a symphonic piece on the world lives, and the connection of all events, the flutter of a butterfly in a hurricane

"Cry those tears and Then dry your eyes tired
every breath you take keeps you alive
butterflies are
properties in flight on a starry
but the ghosts flying on and on
in the sense that we all belong
Oh, Gaia

and the sum of all parts
is the heart that forgives everything
Gaia "

A song that I can not listen without feeling the chills every time.

tracks included in the live show: I Will Find You, Curtains, Given Time

Board for the purchase: one of the most beautiful album and finished PH. Even a good entry point to his music.
